Why Solana Is Now the Third Asset in Israel's First Bank Crypto Offering
Bank Leumi, Israel's largest financial institution, is preparing to offer cryptocurrency trading to its customers starting in early 2027, marking the first such service among Israeli banks. The offering will include three assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL), integrated directly into Leumi's existing capital-markets app rather than requiring a separate download.
What Does This Mean for Solana's Institutional Adoption?
Solana's inclusion alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum in a major bank's retail crypto offering signals growing institutional confidence in the network. The decision to limit the initial menu to just three assets, rather than offering a sprawling token list, suggests that Leumi and its partner Galaxy Digital are prioritizing established, widely-recognized networks. For Solana, this placement puts it on equal footing with Ethereum in a regulated banking environment, a significant milestone for institutional legitimacy.
The partnership structure reveals how modern banks are approaching crypto infrastructure. Leumi will own the customer interface and relationship, while Galaxy Digital, a major cryptocurrency infrastructure firm, will handle the execution layer and custody through its GalaxyOne Institutional platform and custody infrastructure (formerly called GK8). This division of labor allows Leumi to launch a crypto service without building an entire trading operation from scratch.
How Are Banks Competing With Crypto Exchanges?
Placing crypto trading inside Leumi's existing capital-markets app represents a strategic bet that customers will prefer a regulated banking interface over standalone crypto exchanges. The advantage for customers includes several practical benefits:
- Existing Account Access: Customers can trade crypto using the same account and credentials they already use for traditional banking services, eliminating redundant onboarding.
- Compliance Verification: Users have already completed know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money-laundering (AML) checks for their bank account, streamlining the crypto trading setup process.
- Customer Support: Bank customers can access support through established banking channels rather than relying on exchange customer service, which may be less responsive or available.
However, the bank model faces a critical challenge: cost. Crypto exchanges typically charge a fraction of a percent in trading fees, while bank-hosted crypto services often carry higher overhead. Until Leumi discloses its fee schedule and eligibility requirements, the service remains an intention rather than a fully-formed product.
"Digital assets are an increasingly integral part of the global financial system," said Maya Ravia, who heads strategy at Leumi.

Lior Lamesh, CEO of Galaxy Israel, framed the partnership as part of a broader shift in finance. "Banks moving early would help shape finance's transition toward open, programmable infrastructure," he argued, emphasizing that early adoption positions institutions to influence how blockchain technology integrates into traditional finance.
What Remains Uncertain About the Launch?
While the early 2027 timeline is concrete, several critical details remain undisclosed. Commercial terms, fee structures, and customer eligibility requirements have not been made public, meaning it is unclear whether the service will be available to all Pepper mobile banking users or only to Leumi's wealth management clients. These details will ultimately determine whether Leumi has built a genuine alternative to crypto exchanges or simply a more expensive option wearing a familiar banking logo.
The custody arrangement deserves particular attention. Leumi signed a separate agreement with Galaxy for custody infrastructure rather than bundling it into the trading service, suggesting both parties view secure asset custody as a distinct commitment. This custody layer, which holds the actual Solana, Bitcoin, and Ethereum behind the trading interface, is the component that cannot be obscured by a polished app design.
The regulatory environment surrounding crypto could shift significantly between now and early 2027, potentially affecting how the service operates or what assets can be offered. Current Bitcoin and Ethereum prices, along with Solana's valuation, may look entirely different by launch time, though such market movements do not affect the fundamental infrastructure Leumi is building.
For Solana specifically, inclusion in Bank Leumi's offering represents validation from a major regulated financial institution. As more traditional banks integrate crypto trading into their platforms, Solana's presence alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum reinforces its position as a core blockchain network rather than a speculative alternative. The real test will come when the service launches and customers can see whether the bank's offering provides genuine value compared to existing crypto exchanges.
