Mastercard has launched a pilot program with fintech platform Borderless.xyz to simplify how stablecoin payment operators verify each other's trustworthiness, using a standardized credential system that could reshape international digital currency settlements. The initiative, announced on August 6, 2026, addresses a critical bottleneck in stablecoin adoption: each time a payment operator onboards a new partner, compliance teams must restart verification from scratch, slowing growth and raising costs.
Why Is Stablecoin Compliance Slowing Down Cross-Border Payments?
As stablecoins gain traction in international transactions, demand has grown for mechanisms that let payment participants assess counterparties' reliability and regulatory compliance before engaging. The problem is structural. Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO and co-founder of Borderless.xyz, explained that the main challenge for stablecoin payment operators is not processing transfers but scaling compliance procedures. Each new partner requires the verification process to begin from scratch, creating redundant work and delaying network expansion.
Borderless.xyz operates an application programming interface (API) platform that connects businesses to licensed liquidity providers and banking partners without requiring individual integrations. The company's infrastructure spans more than 94 countries, supports more than 63 fiat currencies, and brings together 14 licensed payment service providers. Despite this reach, the compliance friction remains a constraint on faster growth.
How Does Mastercard's Crypto Credential System Work?
Mastercard Crypto Credential is designed to address this bottleneck through standardized trust signals that can be used for customer verification, risk management, and regulatory compliance. Rather than requiring each operator to audit every new partner independently, the system creates a single, reusable credential that signals a participant's trustworthiness across the network.
The pilot will test how this approach improves transparency and predictability of transactions across different blockchain networks. Borderless.xyz will provide its network of stablecoin payment operators for real-world testing, allowing the companies to evaluate the system in actual cross-border payment scenarios. Mastercard's Executive Vice President of Blockchain and Digital Assets, Raj Dhamodharan, noted that the companies began working together through the Mastercard Start Path startup program and continued expanding their collaboration as the digital asset market evolved.
Several members of the Borderless.xyz network are participating in the pilot, including Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe. Many of these companies previously participated in the Mastercard Start Path program and will become among the first stablecoin payment operators to test a network-scale compliance model based on a single audit using Mastercard Crypto Credential.
How This Mirrors Traditional Banking Infrastructure
The approach echoes how correspondent banking transformed international payments decades ago. In traditional finance, correspondent banks act as intermediaries, allowing smaller banks to access global payment networks without establishing relationships with every other bank individually. Mastercard's model applies a similar principle to stablecoins: one standardized audit replaces the need for repetitive verification cycles.
Mastercard has been building stablecoin infrastructure for several years. The company began testing peer-to-peer transactions using Mastercard Crypto Credential in May 2024, added support for non-custodial crypto wallets in November 2025, and launched a platform to support stablecoin transactions in April 2026. The current pilot represents the next phase of that expansion.
