Vidal's initial concern framed Dogecoin as overly dependent on Litecoin for security. However, other developers quickly clarified the relationship. Chromatic X, a developer in the Dogecoin community, argued that Dogecoin's security is not exclusively tied to Litecoin but rather to all Scrypt-based networks that participate in merge mining, including Namecoin and others.

The distinction matters because it means Dogecoin is not hostage to a single project. Instead, it benefits from a shared mining ecosystem where multiple cryptocurrencies use the same proof-of-work algorithm. Current data from June 2026 shows that Dogecoin's hashrate ranged between 2.7 and 3.4 petahashes per second, while Litecoin displayed a comparable hashrate of approximately 2.7 petahashes per second, indicating the two networks operate on similar scales.
